Mars is red because of iron oxide - basically rust - on its surface. The entire planet is basically covered in rusty dust. That's why it looks red from space!

It Used to Be Blue

Evidence suggests Mars used to have liquid water and possibly a thicker atmosphere billions of years ago. It might have looked quite blue and green! What happened to all that water is one of Mars's big mysteries.
