Shooting stars aren't stars at all - they're meteors, bits of dust and rock burning up in Earth's atmosphere. Most are tiny, about the size of a grain of sand.

Meteor Showers

When Earth passes through a trail of debris left by a comet, we get meteor showers. The Perseids in August and Geminids in December are the best!
