What Is a Leap Second?

Earth's rotation is gradually slowing down, and it's also a bit irregular. To keep our atomic clocks in sync with Earth's rotation, we occasionally add or subtract a second - a leap second.

When Was the Last One?

The last leap second was added in 2016. They're added occasionally, usually on June 30 or December 31. Some people argue we should stop using them because they cause problems with computer systems!
